Interview with Gustavo Ortiz

Gustavo Ortiz, has been one of the most important and influential trainers in Colombia, he was in charge of the diagonal movement´s horses (Trote y Galope, Trocha y Galope y Trocha Pura) in el Criadero La Luisa, were he was the principal trainer (diagonals) and managed important horses like: Soberbio de la Luisa F de C(right now in the USA, Trote y Galope World Champion), Cosaco de La Luisa F de C, Estrella de Oriente F de C, Tupac Junior F de C, Lucero de Pahuana, La Sensación, Sensacional de La Luisa, Poema de La Luisa F de C, Altanero de La Luisa F de C, Preambulo de La Luisa (Trote y Galope World Champion), among many others.
These are a few questions I asked him during a recent competition:
How did you began training horses?
Through my brother Fredy Ortiz, he was an excellent trainer, the first horse I trained was named Rondador.
Which trainers do you admire?
Fernando Marin “Maravilla”, Gonzalo Franco, Gabriel Martinez, David Castro.
What do you specially remember of your stay in el Criadero La Luisa?
The great humanity of Mario Valencia La Luisa owner.
At the moment with who are you working?
I am working independently, I have my own farm were I offer all the training services, lodging, and nutrition. Right now I have different horses of different owners.
Which horse that you are training actually, do you consider can be a promising champion?
Euforia de la Encantada (Telurico de La Encantada X Faraona de Las Delicias), she was first at the 32-38 months competition in Agroexpo-Bogotà.
If you had to choose one horse as the best ever Paso Fino, winch one would you choose?
Atrevido del 8 (Amadeus del 8 X Atrevida de La Miel), for his phenotype, his color, his movements I think he is the most fino of all.
And if you had to choose a stallion which one do you consider has or is the most influential one?
Amadeus del 8, I think his offspring are excellent, there are great horses out of him Atrevido del 8, Epulon del 8, Florencia de Santillana, Atrevida de las Palmas, Patrimonio del 8, Resplandor III among many others. Having a offspring of Amadeus is a guarantee of quality.
The best horse you have trained?
Cosaco de La Luisa, he is Trocha Pura Colombiana, excellent horse to train, to ride and to have in a competition, he was declared Out of Contest .
Which horse is going to be the next World Champion at Puerto Rico?
Tormento de la Virginia, I think overall he is the most complete one.
If you could pick one horse so you could be able to train him, which one would you choose?
Capitan de la Vitrina, he is a challenge, his temperament, but a great fino horse.
